Tile Calculator
This calculator determines how many tiles you’ll need to cover a floor, roof, wall, or any other area. It also takes the spacing or overlap of tiles into account to improve precision, as illustrated in the diagram below.
Gap Size
When installing floor or wall tiles, a small space is usually left between them. Tiles often vary slightly in dimensions, so a gap prevents fit issues. These spaces are typically filled with grout, therefore they’re referred to as grout lines or grout size. Grout is a type of cement, and the joint width can range from about 1/16 in to 1/2 in. The required gap size depends on the tile dimensions, material, and design preferences. Achieving very narrow joints is harder unless the tiles are rectified – tiles that have been precisely trimmed to be uniform – which adds to the cost. For consistently cut stones such as granite, tighter joints can make the grout less noticeable.
In certain applications, like roof tiles or wooden siding, the pieces are installed to overlap rather than leave a gap, which helps stop water ingress. The tile calculator can handle both scenarios – enter a positive number for a gap, or a negative number when the tiles overlap.
Tile Installation Options
Size
Tiles come in a broad spectrum, from tiny 3/8‑inch mosaics to large 24 × 48‑inch slabs, and everything in between. Square formats (equal width and length) are the most common, easy to work with, and widely available. While rectangular, square, and parallelogram shapes dominate the market, specialty shapes also exist, though they are trickier to install. Using larger tiles can make a compact space feel more open and reduce the number of grout lines, but they tend to generate more waste. Smaller tiles add visual texture and can be more economical in terms of material usage.
Material
Tiles are classified into several families, such as ceramic, porcelain, glass, quarry, and natural stone. Ceramic and porcelain options are the most budget‑friendly and offer a wide design range. Glass tiles, though unsuitable for floor traffic because they can crack under load, create striking visual effects and are popular for kitchen or bathroom backsplashes. Quarry tiles feature a rough surface that provides traction, making them ideal for outdoor areas and commercial kitchens. Natural stone tiles—including marble and granite—deliver unique patterns, textures, and hues that are difficult to replicate with ceramics, and they tend to blend more seamlessly with grout, giving a cohesive appearance.
Layout Pattern
There are numerous layout patterns for tile installation. The most prevalent is a straight‑line grid using square or rectangular tiles, though arrangements with angled squares or rectangles that produce a diamond‑shaped layout are also common.
Running‑bond patterns, similar to those seen in brick walls, offset each row or column of tiles, typically with a 2:1 length‑to‑width ratio. This style generally requires about 10 % more tiles than a simple grid.
Herringbone layouts arrange tiles at 45° or 90° angles in a zig‑zag fashion. Like running bonds, herringbone designs consume more material than a basic linear pattern.
