    How tall will I be?

    People frequently wonder, "How tall am I going to become?" or "How tall will my child grow?" Height results from both inherited genes and environmental influences, and untangling their exact shares is tricky. Research often cites a genetic share of about 60‑80 %. In practice a child’s stature tends to follow the parents’ measurements but also drifts toward the population average, so extremely tall or short parents usually have children whose height is a bit more moderate.

    Other important factors that contribute to a child's adult height include nutrition, health, sports activities, health and age of the mother during pregnancy, etc.

    The quickest phase of growth occurs in infancy and early toddlerhood. After a steep rise up to about two years old, the speed of growth tapers off and then picks up once more during puberty, creating a second peak known as the adolescent growth spurt. After this, the rate gradually falls to nil, with girls generally leveling off around age 15 and boys around age 18.

    For many people height starts to diminish during middle age, and almost everyone experiences some loss in the later years. The decline is mainly caused by the compression of spinal discs and age‑related degenerative conditions.

    Predicting a child's adult height

    Numerous techniques exist for forecasting a youngster’s final stature, varying widely in reliability. Even the best models remain approximations, so a child’s actual adult height can differ substantially from the estimate.

    Bone age, skeletal maturity method

    Bone‑age assessment is often regarded as the most precise way to estimate future height. One common approach is the Greulich‑Pyle method, which uses an X‑ray of the left hand and wrist to determine skeletal maturity. The patient’s radiograph is matched against standard images in the Greulich‑Pyle atlas, a collection of bone‑age records. By combining the determined bone age with the child’s current height and the atlas data, one can calculate the proportion of growth still remaining. It should be noted that the atlas data were collected between 1931 and 1942 from primarily Caucasian children, which may limit its applicability to today’s diverse populations.1

    The Khamis-Roche method2

    The Khamis‑Roche formula is praised for its accuracy among height‑prediction tools that don’t require a bone‑age X‑ray. It incorporates the child’s current height, weight, and the average height of both parents. Our first calculator is built around this method.

    Note that it is most applicable to Caucasian children between the ages of 4 and 9 who are free from any growth-related condition or disease.

    Using growth charts

    CDC Growth Charts (U.S.) provide a reliable reference for assessing a child’s development. The charts display percentile curves for various body measurements collected from U.S. children. Sixteen distinct charts cover metrics such as height, weight, and head circumference, allowing comparison of an individual child’s data to peers of the same age and sex. Because a child’s growth typically follows a steady trajectory, these percentiles can be used to gauge likely adult height to a useful degree.

    Simple methods

    There are also quick, less precise shortcuts. One popular rule adds 2.5 inches (7.6 cm) to the parents’ average height for a boy, or subtracts the same amount for a girl. Our second calculator applies this method.

    Another simple method is to double the height achieved by the child by age 2 for a boy, or age 18 months for a girl.

    How to get taller?

    Overall, genetics accounts for roughly 60‑80 % of a person’s height. As noted, very tall parents tend to have taller offspring and very short parents tend to have shorter offspring, though the child’s height usually drifts toward the population mean. After the adolescent growth spurt—slightly earlier for girls than boys—growth slows dramatically, with most girls stopping around age 15 and boys around age 18.

    While genetics sets the baseline, various environmental influences also play a role in a child's stature. Some of these can be managed directly, while others are less controllable. The mother’s diet and health during pregnancy can shape the future height of the unborn baby, and after birth, a child’s nutrition and physical activity continue to contribute to growth.

    Recommendations for providing the best conditions for your body to grow follow typical guidelines for healthy living (in no particular order):

    1. Eat as many unprocessed foods as possible such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and dairy.
    2. Avoid eating foods that are high in sugar, trans fats, saturated fats, and sodium.
    3. Exercise regularly to strengthen bones and muscles, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of diseases such as osteoporosis and other issues that could arise from poor health, which could in turn affect growth and height.
    4. Maintain proper posture. Slouching not only makes you appear shorter, but over time a curved spine can actually reduce true height.
    5. Establish a consistent sleep routine. Growth hormone surges during deep sleep, so chronic sleep deprivation in adolescence can hinder growth. Required sleep varies by age, with younger children needing more rest.

    In rare instances, an underlying health issue may limit growth, and medical intervention could help improve height outcomes. Generally, however, the final adult stature is reached by the end of puberty, and most individuals maintain that height into adulthood.
