Concrete consists of coarse aggregates like sand, gravel, crushed stone or slag, all held together by cement. The cement acts as a binding agent, sticking to the aggregates and hardening as it cures. Among the various cement varieties, Portland cement is the most prevalent and serves as a key component in concrete, mortar and plaster mixes.
You can buy concrete in bags—commonly 60 lb or 80 lb—or have bulk deliveries via concrete mixer trucks. Achieving a robust, consistent mix hinges on proper blending of water, aggregates, cement and any additives you choose. Because concrete begins to set quickly, it must be placed while still fluid. Certain mixes are formulated for accelerated setting when speed is critical, while in industrial plants the material may be blended into drier batches for producing precast items like wall panels.
After placement, concrete hardens through a stage known as curing, which unfolds gradually. Around four weeks are needed for the material to attain roughly 90 % of its ultimate strength, and the gain can persist for up to three years. Keeping the surface moist during the early curing phase boosts strength; methods include applying water‑retaining compounds that form a protective film or employing ponding, where the slab is flooded and covered with plastic sheeting.
