How much mulch do I need?

How much mulch you need varies with several considerations, like the kind of mulch selected and its intended function. Since each mulch type behaves differently, the required volume can differ. Moreover, mulch used solely for decorative landscaping may call for a different quantity than mulch employed for garden beds.

Leaves

Leaves shed by deciduous trees can be gathered and shredded to create an organic mulch that shields the soil while adding nutrients. In many regions they are plentiful, making them an easy‑to‑obtain and effective cover that protects the soil throughout the growing season and breaks down into a soil‑like texture by fall, when compost can be layered on top.

The downside of leaf mulch is its occasional scarcity unless the leaves are collected and stored properly. They can also host tiny pests, and if they aren’t shredded enough they may form a compact mat that restricts air and water movement to the soil.

Wood mulch

There are numerous wood‑based mulches—bark chips, wood chips, hardwood, pine, shavings, and more. Like other organic mulches, these wood products decompose, enriching the soil with nutrients, improving its structure, and helping keep weeds at bay.

Because there are so many different types of wood mulch, they can be used for a variety of different applications depending on factors such as how quickly you want the wood mulch to decompose, as well as the desired aesthetic.

Wood mulches, being organic, need to be refreshed more often than synthetic varieties. They may contain impurities, especially if they’re dyed, and bulk‑bagged bark can generate plastic waste from its packaging.

Grass

Rubber mulches

Plastic mulches

The very durability of plastic mulches is also their drawback: they do not break down into organic matter, so they must be removed and replaced periodically, which incurs cost and creates waste with environmental impact.

Plastic mulch can also get too hot, and may not be suitable for warmer climates, as it is possible for the soil to be too warm for particular plants.
