Time Duration Calculator
Use the calculator below to find the hours, minutes, and seconds between two times.
Time Between Two Dates
This tool lets you compute how many days, hours, minutes and seconds separate two dates and times. If you need to increase or decrease a date, head over to the Time Calculator.
Calculate the duration between two times
Finding the interval between two moments may pose some challenges, especially when the minute and second values differ. Below is a step‑by‑step guide to figure out the hour‑minute span for two times that fall on the same day:
- Begin by pinpointing both the start and end times. You’ll then subtract the start moment from the end moment, observing the proper rules.
- Should the times be expressed in 12‑hour format, change them to 24‑hour notation. Morning hours stay unchanged, while afternoon times require adding 12. For instance, 1:00 PM becomes 13:00 in 24‑hour time.
- Determine whether the number of minutes is larger in the starting time or the ending time.
- When the end time contains more minutes than the start time: perform a straightforward subtraction, preserving the hour‑minute split (hours left of ":", minutes right). For example:
13:57 – 9:22 4:35
- When the end time contains more minutes than the start time: perform a straightforward subtraction, preserving the hour‑minute split (hours left of ":", minutes right). For example:
- When the start time carries more minutes than the end time: handle hours and minutes independently. Increase the end minutes by 60 and reduce the end hour by one. Then subtract minutes and hours, again keeping hours left of ":" and minutes right. For example:
13:57 – 9:58 ⇒ 12:117 – 9:58 3:59
