What is a factor?

In multiplication, a factor denotes one of the numbers being multiplied. For instance:

3 × 4 = 12,

The numbers 3 and 4 serve as factors. A single integer can possess several factors. Take 12 as a case: besides 3 and 4, other factors include:

3 × 4 = 12

2 × 6 = 12

1 × 12 = 12

It can be seen that 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 are all factors of the number 12. This is the most basic form of a factor, but algebraic expressions can also be factored, though that is not the intent of this calculator.

What is a common factor?

When two distinct numbers share a factor, it is called a common factor (or common divisor). For illustration:

The factors of 16 include: 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16.

The factors of 12 include: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

Thus, the common factors of 16 and 12 are: 1, 2, and 4.

Many mathematical tasks require identifying the greatest common factor of a set of numbers. Here, the greatest common factor equals 4.

The tool accepts only positive integers to determine their common factors. Although the previous example involved just two numbers, the calculator is capable of handling three or more values.
