Converting between fractions and decimals:
Turning a decimal into a fraction is straightforward once you remember that each digit to the right of the decimal point represents a successive power of ten. The first digit is tenths (101), the second hundredths (102), the third thousandths (103), and so on. Identify the appropriate power of ten based on how many decimal places there are, write the whole decimal part over that power, and then reduce the result. For example, the number 0.1234 has four decimal places, so we form the fraction 123410000, which simplifies to 6175000 after dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
Fractions whose denominators are powers of ten—or can be converted into such—can be rewritten as decimals using the same idea. Consider 12. Multiplying both parts by 5 turns it into 510, and because the denominator is 10, the fraction corresponds to the tenths place, giving 0.5. If the denominator were 100, as in 5100, the result would be 0.05. Any fraction can be expressed in decimal form by adjusting it to a denominator that is a power of ten, after which long division may be required when the denominator is not a simple power of ten.
