The word “bandwidth” can mean different things depending on the context. In computing it refers to the rate at which bits are transferred, usually expressed in bits per second and its metric multiples. Within IT you can talk about network bandwidth, data bandwidth, or digital bandwidth. The most familiar usage, however, relates to the Internet and describes “the amount of information that can be carried by a transmission medium per unit of time.” Keep in mind that the nominal channel bandwidth or capacity is not always equal to the true maximum data throughput. Protocols, encryption and mechanisms such as TCP, which dominate web traffic, can reduce the effective transfer rate below the advertised bits‑per‑second value.
In tech terminology a bit is the smallest data unit, representing either a 0 or a 1. Eight bits form a byte, which can store values from 0 to 255. Transfer speeds are expressed in bits – for example, a connection rated at 8 Megabits per second moves eight megabits each second, equivalent to 1 Megabyte per second. Storage capacity, on the other hand, is measured in bytes; an 8 Gigabytes drive can hold that amount of information, which corresponds to 64 Gigabits.
How much bandwidth a user or organization requires hinges entirely on their online activities. Streaming video or hosting large media libraries, for instance, demands considerably more capacity than casual web browsing.
