Ovulation and Conception

In humans, ovulation happens when ovarian follicles burst and discharge one or more mature eggs. Typically, this event falls within four days on either side of the cycle’s midpoint—about two weeks before the next period begins.

Generally, days 10‑18 of a cycle mark the peak fertility. During this window, an egg can be fertilized only within 12‑24 hours after release, while sperm may survive up to five days inside the body. Having intercourse in the days leading up to and on ovulation raises the chance of conception. If fertilization occurs, the embryo implants roughly 6‑12 days later; if not, the lining sheds and menstruation starts.

Ovulation Prediction

A lot of people try to pinpoint their ovulation day to boost pregnancy odds. Below are some of the most widely used approaches.

Tracking Menstrual Cycles

Our tool relies on monitoring your menstrual pattern to forecast ovulation. For most women, days 10‑18 represent the fertile segment, making it relatively straightforward to spot the optimal conception window if cycles are regular. Since cycle lengths differ, those with non‑28‑day rhythms should keep a detailed record to improve accuracy.

A cycle begins on the first day of bleeding and concludes the day the next bleed starts. Keeping a period calendar can reveal how consistent your cycles are; if they’re irregular, alternative techniques might give a better ovulation estimate.

Tracking Basal Body Temperatures

Basal body temperature (BBT) is measured with a specialized thermometer right after you wake up. Typically, temperature hits its lowest point just before ovulation and then climbs about half a degree Celsius during the fertile phase. Recording daily BBT over several months can highlight your ovulation pattern, though illnesses or infections can skew the reading, making BBT less reliable in those cases.

Ovulation Kits

You can also buy OTC ovulation kits that detect a hormone surge occurring 24‑48 hours before release. While these strips are about 99 % accurate at spotting the hormone, they can’t pinpoint the exact moment of ovulation within that two‑day window. Most kits measure luteinizing hormone (LH), which spikes and triggers the egg’s release.

Some predictor kits analyze estrogen levels in saliva or salt concentrations in sweat, which shift earlier in the cycle than LH spikes. Because they require establishing a personal baseline for these markers, they involve more preparation but can give an earlier heads‑up on ovulation.
