How Much Should I Weigh?

Almost everyone has, at some moment, tried to shed pounds or knows someone who has. This drive often stems from the notion of an “ideal” weight, a concept shaped by the images we encounter on social platforms, television, film, magazines, and the like. While modern discussions of IBW sometimes focus on aesthetic appeal, the original purpose of ideal body weight was to provide a basis for calculating drug dosages, and the equations behind it have nothing to do with a person’s appearance. In fact, the dosing of several medications depends more on IBW than on total body mass. Moreover, many sports use IBW categories to group athletes, making the metric common in athletics as well.

Keep in mind that IBW is an imperfect gauge. It ignores the proportion of fat versus muscle in the body, so a very fit athlete might be labeled as overweight according to IBW standards. Therefore, IBW should be viewed as a rough reference rather than a definitive health indicator or a target weight; you can be above or below your calculated IBW and still be in excellent health.

There is no precise formula for the “right” weight; it varies from person to person. Neither IBW, BMI, nor any other metric can categorically tell you the healthy weight you must reach. These numbers serve merely as guidelines, while the real focus should be on sustainable habits—regular physical activity, a balanced diet of whole foods, sufficient sleep, and so on—rather than obsessing over a target number derived from a generic equation.

Nevertheless, numerous elements influence ideal weight; the primary ones are outlined below. Additional considerations may include medical conditions, how fat is distributed, family history, and more.

Age

Generally, once girls reach 14‑15 and boys 16‑17, age stops playing a major role in IBW because growth plateaus. By the time people reach 70, average height reductions of about 1.5 inches for men and 2 inches for women are common. Aging also brings a decline in lean muscle and a tendency to gain extra fat. While this is a normal part of life, its impact can be mitigated through mindful eating, consistent exercise, stress management, and adequate rest.

Gender

On average, women weigh less than men, despite having a higher body‑fat proportion. Men typically possess more muscle, which is denser than fat, and they also have greater bone density and height compared to women.

Height

Height correlates with greater muscle and fat mass, leading to higher weight. For individuals of comparable stature, a man will usually be roughly 10‑20% heavier than a woman.

Body Frame Size

Another important variable is frame size, which can markedly affect ideal weight calculations. Frames are classified as small, medium, or large and are assessed by comparing wrist circumference to height, as illustrated.

Formulas for Finding the Ideal Weight

The original purpose of IBW equations was to simplify medication dosing. Each formula starts with a base weight for a 5‑foot tall person and adds a fixed amount for every additional inch. For instance, a 5′10″ male using the Devine method would calculate 50 kg plus (2.3 kg × 10) = 73 kg, roughly 161 lb.

Each equation uses its own set of constants, reflecting the investigations and conclusions of the researchers who created them. Among these, the Devine equation remains the most commonly applied method for estimating ideal body weight.
