Body Fat, Overweight, and Obesity

Body fat is scientifically known as “adipose tissue.” This tissue plays several vital roles: it acts as an energy reserve by holding lipids, releases key hormones, and supplies both cushioning and thermal insulation to the body.

Body fat is divided into essential and storage categories. Essential fat represents the minimal amount required for normal physiological and reproductive processes, usually about 2‑5 % in men and 10‑13 % in women. Healthy body‑fat percentages are roughly 8‑19 % for males and 21‑33 % for females. While excess fat poses numerous health risks, too little fat can also be harmful; staying at or below the essential‑fat threshold should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

Storage fat refers to the adipose deposits that build up beneath the skin (subcutaneous) or around internal organs (visceral). When people speak of body fat, they are usually describing this type. A modest amount is normal, but an overabundance can lead to serious health problems.

When extra body fat accumulates without intervention, it can cause a person to be classified as overweight and may progress to obesity. However, being labeled overweight does not automatically mean a high fat proportion, since body weight also reflects muscle, bone, and water. Consequently, individuals with substantial muscle mass are often categorized as overweight despite low fat levels.

How quickly body fat builds up varies among individuals and is influenced by genetics, activity levels, and dietary habits. Some people find abdominal fat especially stubborn to lose. Nevertheless, a balanced diet combined with regular exercise can shrink these stores. Men and women also deposit fat in distinct patterns, which may shift with age; for instance, declining sex hormones after 40—or after menopause for women—often cause men to gain belly fat and women to accumulate fat around the hips and thighs.

Potential Complications of Excess Body Fat

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies obesity as one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide that is estimated to claim 111,909 to 365,000 deaths per year in the U.S. This has been a growing cause for concern because 36.5% of U.S. adults are defined as obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Obesity correlates with lower quality of life, increased risk of mental‑health issues, obstructive sleep apnea, and major fatal illnesses like heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, and diabetes. These complications can shorten lifespan, making obesity a significant focus of medical research.

As noted earlier, adipose tissue secretes several hormones crucial for bodily functions; both a surplus and a deficiency can impair health. Research shows that excess fat—especially around the abdomen—disturbs hormonal balance. Visceral fat also triggers the release of cytokines, signaling proteins that may raise cardiovascular risk. Moreover, visceral fat is linked to elevated low‑density lipoprotein (LDL, “bad”) cholesterol, reduced high‑density lipoprotein (HDL, “good”) cholesterol, and insulin resistance, which can cause high blood glucose and eventually type 2 diabetes. In short, too much visceral fat can have measurable detrimental effects on health.

Measuring Body Fat Percentage

U.S. Navy Method:

Various methods exist to assess body‑fat levels. This calculator relies on equations created at the Naval Health Research Center by Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984. The required body‑part measurements and the corresponding formulas are listed below:
