What Is Being Overweight and Obesity?

Being overweight means your body weight exceeds what is considered normal for your height. Medical experts have established this benchmark using numerous percentile charts derived from body mass index (BMI) measurements across diverse groups. One commonly cited BMI reference was created by three researchers—Must, Dallal, and Dietz—in 1991, based on data from the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I).

Gaining extra weight does not always stem from added fat; sometimes a rise in lean muscle mass is responsible. For instance, elite athletes or soldiers can have very low body fat yet weigh more than peers of equal height because of their substantial muscle development. Although their weight places them in the overweight category, they are not necessarily carrying excess fat.

Obesity describes a condition where the proportion of body fat or adipose tissue is markedly higher than what is deemed appropriate for a given stature. In other words, an obese individual has body fat that surpasses the accepted threshold for their height.

Currently, 34 percent of Americans are overweight and a separate 34 percent are obese, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Genetics Matter, But Don't Tell the Whole Story

Genetics play a noticeable role in predisposing some people to obesity, though this accounts for only a modest segment of the population. A hereditary inclination toward becoming overweight also exists, albeit it is less well defined.

Nevertheless, genes are not the sole factor. As the Harvard School of Public Health recently emphasized, "genes are not destiny."

For example, studies show that some of us have a genetic tendency to gain weight while eating fried foods, while others can consume all the fries they want to without gaining much weight.

A 2008 study involving 17,058 Danish participants showed that regular physical activity can neutralize the impact of a common obesity‑linked variant of the FTO gene. Inactive individuals carrying the gene tended to have higher BMIs than non‑carriers, while active people displayed similar BMI levels regardless of their genetic makeup.

Physical Activity Makes the Difference

It adds up to this: Physical activity gets energy out and helps keep you at a healthy weight, regardless of your genetic inheritance.

The most effective strategy to prevent lifelong obesity is to avoid gaining excessive weight initially. Recent findings indicate that once someone has been overweight and loses weight, they must consistently eat less and exercise more to sustain the new, lower weight—essentially a lifelong maintenance diet—to stay at parity with someone who has never been overweight.

It Helps to Never Gain Too Much Weight

Weight loss puts the body into a metabolically disadvantaged state, the duration of which remains uncertain. Consequently, fewer calories are needed to remain thin, even without aiming for further loss. Experts point out that there’s a metabolic cost associated with having been overweight.

Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that a 10 % reduction in body weight—say, dropping from 150 lb to 135 lb—triggers lasting alterations in hunger‑regulating hormones, prompting increased food cravings. The body attempts to defend its previous heavier weight through robust mechanisms, so once vigilance wanes, weight tends to return because metabolism becomes less efficient. This explains why substantial, sustained weight loss is relatively rare.
