A discount denotes any kind of price cut applied to a product or service. Typically, discounts come in two popular flavours: a percentage reduction or a set‑amount deduction.

When a discount is expressed as a percentage, you subtract that fraction from the original cost—for instance, a 10 % cut on a $45 item. The payable amount can be found by taking 10 % of $45 away from $45, or simply by multiplying $45 by 0.90.

10% of $45 = 0.10 × 45 = $4.50

$45 – $4.50 = $40.50

or

90% of $45 = 0.90 × 45 = $40.50

In this example, you are saving 10%, or $4.50.

A flat‑rate discount means you deduct a set sum from the listed price. So, if a service is priced at $95 and you possess a $20 coupon, the net cost becomes $95 − $20.

$95 - $20 = $75

In this example, you are saving the fixed amount of $20.

These illustrations cover the two most frequently used discount styles. Other, more intricate schemes exist—for example, stacking discounts: first apply a 20 % cut, then a further 15 % on the reduced amount. To work out such figures, visit the Percent Off Calculator.
