Percent Off Calculator
Please provide two values below to calculate.
Discounts expressed as a percentage of the price are widely used. When a product is advertised with X % off, its selling price is lowered by that fraction. For instance, a $279 item with a 20 % reduction is priced at $279 − 20 % × 279.
20% of $279 = 0.20 × 279 = $55.80
$279 - $55.80 = $223.20
You would therefore be saving $55.80 on the purchase for a final price of $223.20.
In this tool, a “stackable additional discount” refers to an extra percentage taken after an initial discount. Continuing the example, the store first reduces the price by 20 %. If you then use a coupon for an additional 15 %, that 15 % is calculated on the already‑reduced amount of $223.20. The total reduction is therefore not 35 % of the original price, but a smaller figure.
15% of $223.20 = $33.48
$223.20 - $33.48 = $189.72
Thus, with a 20% discount off of $279, and an additional 15% off of that discounted price, you would end up saving a total of:
$55.80 + $33.48 = $89.28
The result corresponds to a 32 % reduction instead of 35 %, which is the behavior the calculator is designed to produce. Below is a concise way to perform the same calculation.
Final price = (0.80 × 279) × 0.85 = $189.72
That happens because keeping 80 % of the initial amount is equivalent to removing 20 % from it. Likewise, retaining 85 % after a discount mirrors subtracting 15 % from the reduced price.
